Kathy is Back

After being gone for a few months due to shoulder surgery, Kathy is back at Michiana Dance teaching ballroom dance lessons. This past week, she taught several private lessons and is starting her Trinity School students 2015 Spring session. She is also continuing to coach the Notre Dame ballroom dance team.

Indiana Challenge 2015

Indiana Challenge was a huge success for all the competitors from Michiana Dance! In alphabetical order, we had five students competing: Andreana, Elizabeth, Rachel, Theresa, and Weichuan.

Andreana was amazing! She danced in the Open Gold category which included five dances: Cha Cha, Samba, Rumba, Paso Doble, and Jive. She took first in five freestyles and second in the Scholarship. Andreana won two dances out of five and the winner took three. So, as you can see, it was pretty close.

Elizabeth was fantastic! She won the Bronze Scholarship which had three other competitors. The dances included Cha Cha, Samba, and Rumba. This was by far her best accomplishment. It is amazing to think that only six months ago, Elizabeth competed at Windy City DanceSport dancing the same event and she only took third. Now, after improving her technique and balance, she won the entire event.

This girl was on fire! Just look at her face. She is having so much fun that she literally lit up the room. People in the audience went crazy the moment she started dancing. Of course, she took first place in all the dances even though this was her first ballroom competition. Because we only had a couple of months to prepare, Rachel only danced Cha Cha and Rumba. By the next competition, she will learn Samba and Jive which means she will be able to dance scholarship or championship events.

When you combine skills with charisma, you get Theresa. She is Rachel’s younger sister. This was also her first ballroom competition, but no one could tell. Before Theresa entered the floor, she was a bit nervous. Before the music started, I whispered to her, “Don’t worry. You are the best and everybody is going to watch you.” Then, when the music started, everything changed. Right after we took our first steps, the crowd went wild. The energy in the room changed. This, of course, gave Theresa more fire which made her dance even better. Even the judges couldn’t stop watching her!

Weichuan also was fantastic. She won all the freestyles and took second in the scholarship. Watching her improve from one competition to the next is a pleasure. The interesting thing about Weichuan is that when she started dancing, she literally had zero dance experience. This means no ballet, jazz, or any other type of dance experience. So, going from nothing to competing so well is a great accomplishment.

Besides dancing well, Weichuan had a great look on the floor. Her makeup and hair were great thanks to Wai Mun Spilger. Also, her dress made her look like a seasoned Latin dancer. It is a new dress and Indiana Challenge is the first competition that she danced in it.

Overall, we are proud of all of our competitors. They all did amazing. We could not ask for anything more.
